Caught In A Storm Lightning hit where I was standing Now we’ll have to call the game I would go inside if the conditions were not the same You don’t mind telling the kinds of lies That you don’t want to hear And I don’t mind the kind of situations where my conscious disappears Been here so many times before Don’t see eye to eye no more Here it comes (here it comes) coming up ahead Too late to say sorry or take back what was said If I go, put the blame on me- caught in a storm If I stay when I want to leave, everybody run, everybody run If I go, put the blame on me- caught in a storm Everybody run, everybody run, run, run for cover Tired of waiting, tired of playing With the angel in your eyes Caught in a storm, I think your wings are worn out From holding your head so high You see a bad man with some bad ways On my bad days that’s no lie You’re the weather that likes to pull Clouds across my sky Been here so many times before Don’t see eye to eye no more Here it comes here it comes coming up ahead Too late to say sorry or take back what was said If I go, put the blame on me- caught in a storm If I stay when I want to leave - run, everybody run If I go, put the blame on me- caught in a storm Everybody run, everybody run, run, run for cover Shelter overhead, shelter overhead I need shelter overhead, shelter overhead I need shelter overhead, shelter overhead Shelter overhead, shelter overhead If I go – caught in a storm If I stay when I want to leave - run, everybody run If I go, put the blame on me- caught in a storm Everybody run, everybody run, run, run for cover Shelter overhead, shelter overhead I need shelter overhead, shelter overhead Shelter overhead, shelter overhead I need shelter overhead, shelter overhead We could try to run away We’re never gonna get away We could try to run away We’re never gonna get away Run, everybody run Caught in a storm Everybody run for cover Run, everybody run Caught in a storm Everybody run for cover

Sampaguita 04:43
Sampaguita She’s wind from a wave come to conquer, come to save She descends on the breeze as if my fate has come for me I’ll be a good boy, I’ll stay until the coast is clear I’m kind of anxious my dream come true is almost here I’ll be a good boy and give you all you ever gave If you swear, you’ll never let me get away I promise you, if you promise to get me out of here, I’ll get you out of there I promise you, if you promise to get me out of here, I’ll get you out of there Put ‘em on, lace ‘em up, tie ‘em tight, let’s go Put ‘em on, lace ‘em up, tie ‘em tight (if you’re ready) She’s wind from a wave come to conquer, come to save She descends on the breeze as if my fate has come for me You know I think you’re so fly you must have fallen from so high Hands that grounded you could never hold you up like I - Climb the sky to steal the sun for you and hide the rays away And save them for the rainy days I promise you, if you promise to get me out of here, I’ll get you out of there I promise you, if you promise to get me out of here, I’ll get you out of there I will be around until the coast is clear- Sampaguita, Sampaguita Sampaguita, Sampaguita Put ‘em on, lace ‘em up, tie ‘em tight, let’s go Put ‘em on, lace ‘em up, tie ‘em tight I don’t want to be where I’m not wanted If you don’t want to be where you’re not wanted Then we could be together baby, we could be together, together

You Against Me I used to wish that you were mine It’s not what fate had in store And though I’m thankful we spent some time I wish we could have some more But we’d have to give up something Could you do that? Could you do that? We’d have to give up something Could you do that? Could you do that? You get down with regret and sometimes unfulfilled We haven’t found a spark to match us yet And maybe we never will Cause we’d have to give up something Could you do that? Could you do that? We’d have to give up something Could you do that? It’s what I always wanted – You against me - pressed up so tight, you feel so right You against me - it’s what I always wanted, what I want it to be You against me - pressed up so tight, you feel so right You against me - that’s how I want it to be Our passion never fades away so neither will our story I’ve never known perfection, but you seem so perfect for me There’s no way we could hold onto forever and think we’d pull through together It’s not over ‘til it’s over, ‘til it’s over, ‘til it’s over You against me - pressed up so tight, you feel so right You against me - it’s what I always wanted, what I want it to be You against me - pressed up so tight, you feel so right You against me - that’s how I want it to be Could you do that? (Could you do that baby?) Could you do that? (Come on and get it, come on and get it) Could you do that? (Could you do that baby?) Could you do that? (Come on and get it, get it, get it girl)

My Favorite Rhyme I want to get close enough to inhale your vibe Breathe you up and breathe you in, ‘til you collect inside Like smoke on my clothes or the red in my eyes Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme So many things that I want you to be But none more urgent than here next to me I don’t mind being by myself, but I can’t see you with nobody else I want you to be next to me, always over here I want you to be next to me, always over here I want to get deep enough that I have to dive Beyond the depths of where you think you’re satisfied Now don’t freeze up, we could climb so high When you’re too scared to go up there, I’m the chill running down your spine So many things that I want you to be But none more urgent than here next to me I don’t mind being by myself, but I can’t see you with no one else I want you to be next to me, always over here I want you to be next to me, always over here Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme So many things that I want you to be There’s so many things that I want you to be Come a little closer, got to come a little closer to me Got to get a little closer, got to come a little closer to me Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme Like a favorite song, a favorite poem, or a favorite rhyme My favorite rhyme, my favorite rhyme You’re my favorite rhyme…

The Heat 05:09
The Heat You come for me like cool water sprayed From a hydrant, I watch you run down the summer day Wring a towel over my face Quench my thirst, flood the gutter, wash my drought away The heat, the heat, between you and me The heat, the heat, between you and me… Is burning up, growing, been there so long and you know it Move through the silent room painted black By the night the moonlight runs through the blinds And all down your back You’re the star of the scene, I made a wish upon you Now that you made it come true, I want to show my gratitude The heat, the heat, between you and me The heat, the heat, between you and me… Is burning up, growing, been there so long and you know it Keeps burning up, growing, heat been there so long, and you know it We could be the kind that stays out all night long – but then we ain’t got time to play We could be the kind that likes to sit at home – I’m gonna give you a reason to stay When you asked what I needed I said time, of the quality kind Take anything you want, take anything you want, take anything you want of mine, anything you need We could talk about it or we could get together We could talk about it or get together, together We could talk about it or we could get together We could talk about it or get together, together

And Then You Came Along Stray cat how you been Isn’t it funny how our paths have crossed again Now that everyone’s let us down Long forgotten roads, littered with memories Scattered by an echo that’s found its way back to me I think that we could be so good together If we could only set aside some time Just a little bit would be good enough And “we” doesn’t have to be defined I think that we could probably talk forever I could listen to you all day I want you to know when you give the signal – I will be ready to go I was doing alright, I was doing just fine And then you came along and kissed me Now my mind is blown The night’s about to end But it seems too soon to go Sit in my car listening to summer through the window I wish that all the pieces fit, I wish we had some better luck Every now and then we toy with it When we probably should give it up I think that we could be so good together If we could only set aside some time Just a little bit would be good enough And “we” doesn’t have to be defined I think that we could probably talk forever I could listen to you all day I want you to know when you give the signal – I will be ready to go I was doing alright, I was doing just fine And then you came along and kissed me Now my mind is blown And then you came along And then you came along And now I know what I was missing And now I know what I’ve been missing

SUPER HERO KILLER

Breathe You Up & Breathe You In

CALM + COLLECT

‘Breathe You Up & Breathe You In’ is the new album from St. Louis group Super Hero Killer, a band that steer their music effortlessly between muscular funk, emotional rock and classic soul reference points.

The roots of Super Hero Killer lay in a St. Louis group consisting of vocalist and bassist Donald Williams (formerly of 1990s Columbia-signed punk-funk group Sinister Dane), drummer Grover Stewart and future Calm + Collect founder and Run The Jewels producer Nick Hook. Some time after Hook left for New York, Williams and Stewart recruited Jay Summers (guitar, backing vocals) and Jesse Gannon (keys, backing vocals) and started playing gigs around St. Louis as Super Hero Killer. Gaining a solid reputation on St. Louis’s notoriously fickle music scene, the group released their debut EP in 2012 then quickly disappeared from view.

Williams’s divorce provided the catalyst for the six songs contained on ‘Breathe You Up & Breathe You In’. In the wake of the collapse of a stable relationship, Williams set about looking for romance, intimacy and friendship, a process that provided the impetus for the return of Super Hero Killer. “Every song on this album is about a woman,” says Williams. “They’re all about actual people who existed in my life at one point or another, and actual relationships.”

The album begins with ‘Caught In A Storm’, led by a joyous electronic melody which masks the song’s message about being trapped in a bad relationship. The song is framed with a sense of uncertainty, of feeling like you can’t escape. The juxtaposition of an outwardly upbeat tone with a deeper message is a Super Hero Killer signifier, appearing frequently across the album, albeit in different ways. Closing track ‘And Then You Came Along’, a song that perfectly expresses the disarray of emotions as a new relationship starts up, switches effortlessly between a heavy, intense interplay between the musicians and a sense of calm levity, only to end with an unresolved string section that is neither fully melancholy or completely euphoric.

These tracks showcase a tight, focussed group providing the backdrop for Williams’s commanding vocal. On ‘Sampaguita’, named after the national flower of the Philippines in homage of a Filipino girlfriend, we hear a complex, uncertain tenderness rising out of the divorces that Williams and his lover were going through, finally blooming into a thing of extreme beauty. “When I was writing this song I was influenced a lot by Paul Weller’s ‘English Rose’,” explains Williams. “It’s all about finding this happiness inside a bad situation. We were still in that bad situation at the time, but we could still find something to be happy about.”

The album’s centrepiece is ‘The Heat’, detailing a tumultuous relationship, doomed to failure but built on intense emotions. The track finds the group at their heaviest and most insistent, delivering a white-hot backdrop for Williams’s vocal. “The middle part of that song is my favourite part of the whole record,” enthuses Williams. “It just explodes and takes off. Me and guest vocalists Blvck Spvde and Alexis Coleman do this whole Sly Stone thing – I sing something, they sing something, we all come together with the harmonies and shit. I just love that part so much.”

With songs ranging from Motown-esque romantic soul to heavyweight funk, ‘Breathe You Up & Breathe You In’ is an album that deftly documents the ups and downs of love, lust and longing and which is happily free of any sort of need to conform to expectation. “When I write, there are zero rules,” concludes Williams. “We all like different types of music: whatever we like, that’s what we do. There are so many artists that I like and respect that have done similar things – look at some of the things Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye did in the 1970s. They were doing whatever they wanted to do, making records that weren’t ‘normal’. That’s what I want Super Hero Killer albums to be like. That’s where I want our music to go. No rules.”
